In this video, Brenda K. B. Anderson demonstrates how to crochet the beautifully textured Waffle Stitch. This pattern uses post stitches to create raised columns and ridges, resembling a waffle texture. Logged-in members can download the stitch chart for a visual guide.

To start, chain a multiple of 3 + 3 stitches, plus 1 for the turning chain. In her example, Brenda begins with a foundation chain of 16 stitches and works into the bottom of the chain to start the swatch.

**Row 1:** Start in the third chain from the hook (the first 2 chains count as the first DC of the row), then DC into each chain across.

**Row 2:** Ch 2 (counts as the first DC), turn, FPDC into the second stitch, then [DC into each of the next 2 stitches, FPDC into the next stitch] across until one stitch remains (the ch-2 turning chain). DC into the top of the turning chain.

**Row 3:** Ch 2 (counts as the first DC), turn, work 1 DC into the next stitch, then [FPDC into each of the next 2 stitches, DC into the next stitch] across until one stitch remains, then DC into the top of the ch-2.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 for the pattern. To make the design more symmetrical, finish by repeating Row 2.

Brenda provides plenty of helpful tips throughout the demonstration. She explains the relationship between the post and top of each stitch, as well as offering advice on creating a neat side edge.

This textured stitch is ideal for blankets, dishcloths, and scarves. Even though the reverse side differs from the “Right Side,” both sides are visually appealing. The stitch also has enough drape for a sweater and provides warmth for a cozy winter hat.
