Water can appear in many forms—ocean waves, tranquil ponds, fast-moving rivers, and more. Each has distinct characteristics, and in this video, artist and instructor Peter John Reid teaches you how to observe and paint choppy water. While the energy and movement of choppy water might seem chaotic at first glance, Peter demonstrates the underlying patterns and guides you through the process of creating water with realism, energy, and movement. Although Peter works with acrylics, these techniques apply to any medium you choose.

You’ll first see how large color gradients in the water provide continuity, supporting the smaller, broken brushwork that appears on top. Next, watch as Peter shows how to add ripples that capture the color shifts and rhythmic feel of choppy water. You’ll learn to create movement in the water using elongated, rounded brush strokes and compound shapes. Peter also explains how he uses a stay-wet palette to keep his liquid acrylic paints workable throughout the painting session.
