Class Sessions
Meet Susan B. Anderson and start class by learning the benefits of making toe-up socks and look at the supplies you’ll need to succeed. Susan will explain the different parts of a knitted sock and how to make them work together based on your unique measurements.
Casting On (15:55)
After taking a look at your pattern, yarn options and sizes, you’ll learn how to work Judy’s Magic cast on to create an invisible seam! Then, you’ll practice working in the round with both double-pointed and magic loop needles so you’re comfortable using either type.
Working the Toe & Foot (25:35)
The next step in your sock journey is working the toe increase. Susan will help you create an even increase, and you’ll see how to check gauge to make sure your socks are properly sized. You’ll also customize the length of your sock foot for a comfortable, custom fit.
Placing the Afterthought Heel (17:32)
Learn how to work Susan’s favorite part of toe-up socks: the afterthought heel. She’ll explain how this fun heel is made and fits into the ‘sock map’. Next, you’ll discover the best yarns to use for the heel placeholder, and Susan will share tips on working with self-striping yarn.
The Leg & Cuff (13:20)
Ready for more smooth sailing? You’ll start to make the sock leg, using this space to customize your socks. Susan will show you how to make a cuff and give you a few options for the most comfortable and stable fit before showing you an easy but stretchy way to bind off your socks.
Working the Heel & Finishing (31:44)
Before you know it, you’ll be ready for the big finale: the heel. Susan will walk you step by step through removing the placeholder yarn, picking up stitches and working the heel decreases. Ever heard of the Kitchener stitch? You’ll use it to close up your heel invisibly! Then, finish your socks in style with weaving in ends and blocking.
